One thing I’ve always prioritized are photo sessions to commemorate big life events – from engagement to wedding to pregnancy, newborn and more. I was very on top of planning our maternity photos the first time and I think we took them when I was around 32-ish weeks pregnant. With our second baby, it was a little bit less timely and this time around, it nearly slipped my mind between selling our house and moving! Fortunately, I’m part of some local mom groups on Facebook and I saw a post with maternity photographer recommendations, which reminded me I needed to schedule a session. We really lucked out with our photographer, Brynn – she was great with our girls and took some beautiful photos! Since I’ve now had three maternity sessions, I thought I’d share a little bit about how to choose the perfect maternity photo outfits.
Choosing a Location for Your Session
One of the first things our photographer and I discussed was the ideal location for our session. If you have a particular style or backdrop in mind, now is the time to share that with your photographer so you can pick the perfect location. For me, I tend to prefer classic images, so I didn’t want the backdrop to be too trendy or modern. We decided on Overton Park, a beautiful public park in Memphis, which has beautiful architecture, brick walkways and lots of blooming flowers and gorgeous landscaping – right up my alley!
Deciding On the Perfect Maternity Photo Outfits
Once we had the location nailed down, choosing the perfect outfit became top priority. It’s very helpful to have an idea of the scenery before you choose your outfit! Fortunately, PinkBlush sent me a beautiful maternity dress to wear – it ended up coordinating so well with our photo backdrop. This dress is the perfect mix of feminine and romantic and I thought it was a great choice for celebrating our third baby girl. This is actually my second PinkBlush dress for a photo session – I purchased a gorgeous burgundy velvet dress for our Christmas card photos this past year and it photographed so well! If you’re looking for the perfect dress for an event or photo session, I highly recommend PinkBlush – their quality is outstanding and the clothing is beautiful!
Coordinating Your Maternity Photo Outfits With Your Family
If you’re planning to have your family in your maternity photos (which I highly recommend), be sure you coordinate their outfits with yours. My rule of thumb is to always pick my outfit first and build out everyone else’s around mine – that tends to make life a little easier since men and kids generally aren’t as picky about their outfit choices! I decided on these sweet little white dresses for the girls and my husband already had a pink gingham button-down that he wore for this session. Honestly, he rarely has to buy new clothes for photo sessions since he has button-down shirts in every color – it’s usually just me and the girls that need new outfits!
I definitely think the session location dictates the style of your maternity photo outfits, so take some time to research your local area and decide on the perfect backdrop. Most photographers will share recommendations with you, too, so be sure to ask when you’re booking a session!
