It’s here…the dreaded cold and flu season that seems to coincide with some of the busiest, most joyous months of the year. We’ve already been through a round of sickness and as I’m writing this, a cold has seemed to have caught up with me yet again! With little ones in preschool, it’s inevitable that our household sees plenty of colds throughout the fall and winter months. Fortunately, I’ve learned a little something about managing sickness in our house each time it happens and I wanted to share some of my favorite ways to relieve cold and flu symptoms.
Try to isolate the germs to one area.
Easier said than done, especially when you’re a parent – but making an effort to stay in one area and avoid spreading germs across the whole house can potentially prevent others in your home from coming down with sickness. In most cases, that would be your bedroom – which is ideal, so you can get some much-needed rest, too!
Sanitize everything.
Speaking of germs – when someone in our house is sick, I like to go around spraying everything with a disinfectant…door knobs, light switches, cabinet knobs, you name it. It’s also smart to regularly mist your kids’ backpacks with a disinfectant when it comes in the door as an added way to kill germs before they strike back.
Get relief.
When you’re sick with a cold or the flu, in that moment, all you really want is some relief from the discomfort you’re feeling. A go-to of mine has always been Theraflu – and thankfully, they’ve just introduced a new way to do sick differently and tackle cold and flu season – with TheraFlu PowerPods at Walmart! These nifty pods are easy to find on the cold medicine aisle at Walmart, and they fit into most single-serve coffee pod machines to provide relief for the most severe cold and flu symptoms like nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, headache, body aches and fever. There is also a nighttime formula that relieves runny nose and sneezing, too. As with any medicines, you should always use as directed…but simply knowing it’s as easy as “press, sip, relief” is enough to draw me in during cold and flu season! The best part is, I can quickly add them to my Walmart grocery pickup order and avoid having to go in the store – a definite perk if I’m under the weather!
Stay hydrated.
One of the best things you can do when you’re not feeling your best is drink plenty of water and other clear liquids. I personally know how hard it is to drink anything when you’re sick, so I like to have low-calorie/low-sugar electrolyte beverages on hand for those occasions. And of course, incorporating Theraflu PowerPods into your liquid intake for the day will not only provide additional hydration but will also help relieve the common symptoms of a cold or the flu.
Get some sleep.
Finally, ensuring you get enough rest when you’re under the weather is essential for healing. Don’t feel like you need to get up and do things around the house when you’re not well (I’m so guilty of this!) – after all, nothing is more important than getting better. Be sure to also check out these things that can keep you healthy each day.
