As a mom, I’ve become more conscious of the products we use in our home to eliminate toxic chemicals and keep everyone happy and healthy. Call me crazy, but I’m one of those people who actually love to clean – there’s nothing quite like having a sparkling clean home to relax in. With kids running around, it’s easier said than done – but I still make an effort!
Generally, my girls follow me around when I’m cleaning the house and they’re touching things and are in close contact with the cleaning products I’m using – so I’ve really been reading labels and making sure the things I’m using are non-toxic. To be honest, so many cleaning products out there contain harmful chemicals – it can be overwhelming trying to navigate what’s safe and what’s not! Today, I’m sharing three ways in which we’ve tried to eliminate toxic chemicals from our cleaning routine.
Keep drains clear with TubShroom.
Every so often, our tubs and sinks will start to drain so slowly that they become nearly impossible to use. In the past, I’ve reached for the clog remover liquid but with the desire to eliminate toxic chemicals in mind, I really began to avoid using these products. Fortunately, I came across TubShroom, a drain protector and hair catcher that fits neatly inside your tub drain to eliminate buildup that causes dreadfully slow water drainage. The neat thing about the TubShroom is the fact that it catches hair (both human AND pet!) yet doesn’t interfere with the flow of water down the drain. Every few weeks, all you have to do is remove the plug and wipe it clean with a paper towel – no harmful chemicals needed!
You can purchase a TubShroom online or by visiting your local Bed, Bath & Beyond or Target store. The makers of TubShroom also created a SinkShroom for your bathroom sinks and a ShowerShroom for stand-up shower drains – be sure to check those out, too!
Use all-natural cleaning products.
On a similar note, I like to stick with naturally derived cleaning products for our home, too. I grew up using the most toxic of toxic products, like most everyone, because we weren’t really clued into the damaging effect of chemicals as much as we are now. I have several favorite all-natural cleaning products and I recently found a great non-toxic washing machine cleaner made with citric acid instead of harsh chemicals. It’s definitely becoming easier to stick to natural cleaning products these days as they’re readily available and affordable, too!
7 Things I Do Daily to Stay Healthy
Ditch the aerosol.
Okay, so this one isn’t exactly cleaning but I would be remiss not to share this gem I found last year. We used to use aerosol air freshener in our bathrooms (so bad for you!), but one night, we were watching YouTube and a hilarious commercial came on for an essential oil bathroom air freshener that you simply spray into the toilet bowl. I think we can all agree that essential oils are having a moment – but the crazy thing is that they actually have so many functions!
