I just realized I haven’t posted any updates about Tone It Up lately…oops! I’m still loving it, and I’ve definitely felt healthier and more energetic since following the TIU plan. I have to admit that I haven’t necessarily followed the plan 100%, but that’s okay with me, because it’s all about moderation! And its not like I eat “unhealthy” anyways – but for example, I may have a starch for dinner from time to time even though TIU calls for no starches after 3pm, etc. Obviously, nothing that ruins the plan. ha.

I’ve gotten used to packing next-day lunches in the evening after dinner, so I’m not rushing around in the morning. While I used to literally take a turkey, spinach, and hummus sandwich for lunch, now I take a morning snack, lunch, an afternoon snack, plus lots of water to drink. Making lunches the night before obviously saves time, since there’s some planning involved! Here’s a typical workday mealplan following TIU:

Breakfast: Protein pancake + Bombshell Spell – still loving this combo. You can’t beat 32 grams of protein in ONE meal!
Snack #1: Nonfat greek yogurt + a piece of fruit OR a ThinkThin/Luna/Larabar
Lunch: Salad – kale, mushrooms, cucumbers, lean protein (tofu/99% lean ground turkey/albacore tuna), hummus, balsamic vinagar + an orange
Snack #2: Veggies + hummus
Dinner: Grilled Chicken + roasted broccoli
Occasional evening snack: Nonfat greek yogurt + frozen blueberries

Since I track my meals with MyFitnessPal (love the convenient iPhone app!), I see how many calories and nutrients I’m consuming every day. The biggest impact that TIU has had on my diet is the amount of protein I’m consuming now. I love it! I’m consuming anywhere from 75-110 grams of protein each day, which is a LOT more than before TIU.

I also started waking up 30-45 minutes early at least 2-3x a week to do a HIIT workout. One of the key principles of TIU is doing a 20-30 minute HIIT workout first thing in the morning to jumpstart your metabolism. I wouldn’t say that I hate early mornings, but I tend to go to bed too late, so it’s tough waking up even earlier than I already do! I finally committed myself to trying it, and I immediately loved how I felt afterwards. Sure, it’s still tough to wake up before it’s light outside in order to run…but I feel so energized and awake afterwards. I haven’t committed myself to doing this every day, though, because I still haven’t found a way to go to bed earlier at night (I need to work on that!). It’s nice to get a small workout done in the morning, though, so when I get home after work I have a shorter 2nd workout! I like to workout for at least an hour a day 6-7 days a week, so regardless of whether or not I wake up for my morning workout, I still workout in the evening.

I do love the toning workouts that the TIU girls provide. I like strength training, but I’m admittedly more of the cardio type, so having these short but effective strength/toning workouts have been great to motivate me to incorporate other types of workouts. I’ve also gotten back into regular Hot Yoga/Hot Vinyasa classes, which has helped significantly reduce running-related injuries. I LOVE yoga, and I went without it for way too long. Luckily, my favorite studio is literally 4 miles from work, so I go directly to yoga class after work one day per week. I’d go more but I’m pretty sure I should save some money for our wedding. 😉

I'm loving the TIU plan as well!! Getting in more protein and doing the early morning workouts are probably my favorite parts – oh and the protein pancakes. Love those!! 🙂

Hi!
I am so happy I found your blog. I recently started the TIU plan, and I keep hearing how much people love the protein pancake. Mine do not turn out well at all! And when I can get them to resemble a pancake, they taste awful. What type of protein do you use?

  Oh, I hope I can help because I LOVE protein pancakes (especially with a little bit of peanut butter & raw agave)! I have used EAS 100% Vanilla Whey protein, Target Market Pantry Vanilla Whey Protein, and Walgreens Vanilla Whey Protein. All of them make great protein pancakes, although I've found that the texture of the Walgreens protein tends to work best!
  I make mine with 1/2 mashed banana, 1 scoop protein powder, and 1/4 cup of egg whites. I hope it works out for you! 🙂
