I used to read constantly…I could literally read a novel from cover-to-cover in a single day! As I was sitting here on my iPad recently, I thought about how long it’s been since I’ve read a book…and it made me sad. I love to read, but somewhere along the way of a busy 1.5 years (engagement, wedding, newlywed life, new job…) I’ve forgotten to pick up an actual book. Most of my reading these days is on a computer, iPad, or smartphone screen. And I know that what I’m reading is valuable and educational even, but I really want to get away from my reliance on technology and all of the distractions that it entails.
My goal, starting now (after I publish this post and step away from the iPad…ha) is to make more time to read actual books instead of staring at a screen all the time. Not only is it good for my mind, but it’ll be easier on my eyes too! Our annual beach vacation is coming up in a few weeks, and I plan to take a few books with me to read while I’m laying on the beach and while I’m relaxing at the cottage. I also want to make a huge effort to put away my smartphone for a majority of the vacation. Our honeymoon was absolutely perfect, mainly due to the lack of distraction by our phones…meaning that ‘quality time’ together was REALLY quality time…not sitting next to each other while checking Facebook. I’ve touched on my feelings about technology interfering with relationships in this post, and my feelings about that hasn’t changed! While I try to make a conscious effort to put the phone, tablet, laptop, etc. down, sometimes I fail at it miserably. I want to find more time in my day to relax and enjoy my spare time, and picking up a good book has always been the best way for me to do just that!
