I️f you’re anything like me, you may be running low on ideas to keep your kids occupied right now! I️’ve seen tons of great ideas out there, the main issue is my girls only last 5-10 minutes on each activity before they’re ready to move on. With that said, I️ thought back to my school days and some of the science experiments I️ remember doing and decided to show them how baking soda and vinegar react when mixed together. I️ originally tossed around the idea of a papier-mache volcano, but decided that was a little more in-depth than I️ wanted to go right now (save that for a rainy day) – and that’s how I️ settled on this idea instead!

Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiment

First, you’ll want to gather the items. Make sure you have baking soda, vinegar (I️ used white vinegar, but apple cider vinegar will also work), food dye and the proper bowls/dishes. I️ used rectangle glass containers for the baking soda and glass ramekins for the vinegar.
1. Pour a layer of baking soda in the rectangle or square dish.
2. In glass ramekins or cups, pour about 1/4 cup of vinegar in each and then add different colors of food dye to each one and stir well.
3. Using medicine droppers or spoons, let your kids transfer the colored vinegar to the baking soda dish and watch it foam and sizzle as the two react. The fun colors add a little extra fun for the kids and as a bonus, they can learn color mixing to make new colors!

They had a lot of fun with this and actually ask me to do this baking soda and vinegar activity with them all the time now. I️ love that it’s a low-cost and simple project that keeps them occupied longer than 5 minutes, unlike most things we do! Ha. If you find yourself running out of ideas, be sure to give this one a try. Check out this post for more fun activity inspiration.
