The past two weeks have been a whirlwind between vacation, Blakely’s pineapple birthday party, traveling home and the girls starting preschool. With that said, I’ve been wanting to write this birthday recap post and finally got around to it!
A few weeks ago, I shared my pineapple birthday party inspiration on the blog and I’m so excited about how it all came together. I had my doubts going into it, because finding the type of pineapple decor I envisioned proved more difficult than I expected. Fortunately, Target, Amazon and HomeGoods came to the rescue – in addition to a few other places I’ll share below – and I felt like I pulled off a pretty coherent theme!
I had never planned an early morning birthday party before, but knew that it would be the best time for several reasons – namely because Blakely naps around 1 or 2 and a mid-afternoon party would mean she wouldn’t be in the greatest mood! Also, we were fortunate enough to have her pineapple birthday party at my parents’ beach house, so we were able to have both sides of family over – but beach traffic in the summer is terrible, so we figured the earlier the better to beat the rush. The only downside of choosing an early party time is rushing around in the morning to get things decorated, prepped and running errands for the balloons and cake, etc.
We were planning to have the party entirely outside, but I didn’t consider the steady breeze that is always present at the beach – until an hour before the party as we started decorating and nothing would stay in place! A quick change of plans later, we transformed my parents’ living area into a pineapple birthday party scene. We still ate outdoors, but it was actually nice to have all of the food and decor inside to keep things in order.
I wanted to keep the cake simple but still elegant. I usually order all of my special occasion cakes from Whole Foods because they’re the best in my opinion, but without a Whole Foods nearby, I decided on Publix. I’d also heard wonderful things about the Publix bakery, so I was confident that all would turn out well. I was so impressed that they had zero issues with my picky custom order (funfetti cake with funfetti icing between the layers and pink ombre icing on the outside with gold sprinkles #highmaintenance) and the cake was not only gorgeous, but it tasted great, too! There may have been some Blakely-sized fingerprints dipped into the icing before the cake was served. 😉
I also stuck with the pineapple theme for the party food 🙂 We had chicken, swiss + pineapple skewers, BBQ pineapple meatballs, donuts with pineapple toppers, pineapple fruit dip (everyone loved this!) + fruit, chips + pineapple salsa and ham biscuits.
We had such a fun day celebrating Blakely and I’m pretty sure she had a fabulous time. She totally fell asleep in the swing later that afternoon from all of the partying we did! 🙂
How I Made Gold Pineapples
These gold pineapples were SO easy to make and ended up being pretty inexpensive decor (they were only $1.88 each at Walmart, plus the cost of spray paint – I did the entire project for under $10! Just place your pineapples on a piece of cardboard, carefully spray painting the entire fruit with the gold paint. You may have to go back over certain areas to cover fully. Then, I got up close and painted the green stem to coat it inside and out. I also saw photos of people leaving the stem green, but the stems weren’t looking so hot on the pineapples I had, so gold paint it was!
