Its hard to believe its been nearly two months since we returned home from Europe. What seemed like a huge amount of time spent overseas when we were actually there seems like an extremely short period of time now. In my mind, I can still see the bright blue water on French Riviera, the pretty red telephone booths in London, and the sun setting at 10pm across Europe. When I think about it, I feel like I was just there…and I guess two months isn’t really so long ago. But after spending half the year focused on our European adventure (planning started in January, we left in May, and didn’t get back until the end of June!), I am in the beginning stages of being reminiscent of it all.
I admit that there were times when I was abroad that I just wanted to pack my bags and go home. But that homesick feeling didn’t last: it only ever happened when stress entered the picture (like at almost every train station…haha). Otherwise, the feeling of having all the time in the world to take in my surroundings was amazing. At home, when did I really have time to sit at a charming coffee shop, just talking and watching the world go by? I didn’t. I think that was the beauty of traveling to Europe: no commitments (minus a few train/plane reservations…), just time. And room for adventure. I pride myself on being spontaneous and adventurous, but I truly never tested them until I hopped on a plane headed to Europe. That’s when I first realized that my dreams and hopes of adventure were about to get real. I honestly don’t think I will ever have that feeling again: literally shaking and almost in tears with excitement as our plane began descending into London. Sure, I plan to go back and see other parts of Europe and plenty of other places, but that feeling of being on your own for the first time in a foreign country is spectacular, frightening, and exhilarating, especially being with the only other person you’d ever want to share such an adventure with. I cannot imagine going on that trip with anyone else but my favorite person in the entire world, and I’m overwhelmed with gratefulness that we were able to go together. I look back on our trip with such profound fondness simply because I know we both will always have every little detail in our minds to look back on, and its something we’ll always share. There are a lot of things that two people share in a relationship, but not every couple can say they shared an epic European trip for a month. For that, I’m blessed.
